#27: Fizzies
Fizzies were the bee’s knees back in the swinging ’60s. Imagine a tablet that could transform dull water into a fizzy, flavored delight! They were flying off the shelves, with flavors like cola, root beer, and cherry tickling taste buds everywhere. But, alas, trouble was brewing. To replicate these tantalizing tastes, artificial sweeteners were used, and that’s when the fizz started to fizzle out.
Saccharin, one of those artificial sweeteners, was suspected to be a sinister agent causing bladder cancer when guzzled in hefty doses. The FDA, playing detective, sniffed out this potential villain and promptly showed it the exit door. Consequently, Fizzies’ dazzling success story began to lose its sparkle, and in the end, it didn’t just fizzle out; it practically evaporated.
