Bride in Tibet
Weddings in Tibet are often initiated by the elders in the family, much like the grandma imploring her grandchildren to get married so that she could take part in the celebration. An elder from the groom’s side visits the family of the bride-to-be, bearing tea and sweets, in order to propose a union between the families.
Accepting the gifts means they have accepted the proposal. It might seem strange that the proposal should come from the groom’s grandfather, rather than the groom, but that’s how they have done it for years in Tibet, and some traditions never die. The traditional wedding dress and headpiece, which is made of beads, are made by the groom’s side, and are adorned with silver jewelry.
