#18: Here’s a Hot Tip
The way the restaurant industry works in the United States is pretty messed up, if you think about it. Restaurant owners severely underpay their employees, expecting their wages to be made up by customers, who are expected to pay extra money on top of the cost of their meal. Most customers I know hate the system, and waitstaff tends not to like it much either, as it can be pretty bad for your wallet if you get stuck with a lot of bad tippers.
Personally, I think we should do away with tipping altogether, and here is one case study that proves that that can be a viable system! When this owner treated his employees as though they were actually valuable to him, he found that it did not hurt the business, and that in fact, business went up. We should all learn something from that.
