Rhythmic gymnastics combines amazing athletic feats with cadence and timbre. It was first recognized as a sport by the International Gymnastics Federation in 1963 but didn’t become an Olympic event until 1984. Rhythmic gymnastics is an Eastern European specialty and is defined by the use of hoops, ropes, balls, and ribbons.

It is one of the few women-only sports, though Japan has begun training men, and they hope to start a men’s Olympic team in the future. It is one of the top sports competitions in the World Games, and Birmingham, Alabama, will host it in 2022.
