Hush Shopkeepers
Even during the Prohibition, many people still went out of their way for a chance to relax with a nice drink at the end of the day. During those times, people relied on “hush shopkeepers”, who sold alcoholic beverages under-the-table and against the law.
These shopkeepers worked hard to avoid being caught by law enforcement while still aiming to keep their loyal customers happy by providing the beverages they wanted. These shopkeepers were in high demand, so the pay was well worth the effort for many.
