#34: Tallying Around the World
Tallying is a simple way to keep a count and quickly add up the numbers afterwards. With this chart, we see how the different parts of the world write their tally marks, which is something you probably never gave any thought to. If you’ve gone to school in North America or Europe, you’re likely familiar with the form of tallying using straight lines and crosses.
Oddly enough, Australia and Zimbabwe also share the European form of tallying. But in Brazil and South America, tallies are added in the form of boxes. France and Spain also tally using the box system, which comes as a surprise since they are European countries. The tallies used in parts of Asia look really foreign to those not familiar with them.
