Oh Mama
Alma mater is an allegorical Latin term that literally means “bountiful mother” but is used to identify a school, college, or university that one attended. Americans LOVE their alma mater. They still feel a strong emotional connection to the college or university they studied at even when they’re 30 or 50 or 70 or any age (I know I do!). Americans take pride in the school they went to, and wear the school’s T-shirt, even years after.
They get special satisfaction if their kids want to attend their own alma mater. And people actually mention where they went to school, even if it’s been a very long time since they’ve graduated. We even mention where politicians went to school. It’s an interesting American phenomenon and I was surprised to learn that people from other countries generally don’t feel that way about the college they went to and graduated from.
