Driving Us Nuts
Everything in America is big. Not big – huge. Including our roads of course. Federal standards for highways in the US recommend 12-foot lanes, which are very wide. Plus, we have a lot of lanes. The Katy Freeway, or Interstate 10 west of Houston, for instance, is the widest freeway in the world, with up to 26 lanes in some parts!
It’s said to be the widest highway in the world. It serves more than 219,000 vehicles daily in Texas. Yes, we have roads with an insane number of very-wide lanes, which would intimidate a European driver or people from other countries. To us huge roads are the norm. And it makes sense – we drive everywhere and we spend a lot of time in cars.
