Bag It!
In America, the supermarket cashier bags your groceries for you. That is (another reason) why America is awesome. Once upon a time, American grocery stores actually had dedicated employees named baggers. Their job was to pack your groceries for you, and sometimes they would even help you bring your groceries to your car.
As minimum wages increased, most supermarkets stopped employing baggers, but since we were already used to someone else packing our groceries for us, it became the cashier’s responsibility. Imagine my surprise – and the cashier’s surprise and annoyance! – the first time I went to Europe and attempted to buy something at the supermarket. I just stood there waiting, and the cashier didn’t understand why I wasn’t moving. Talk about awkward!
