Do Pilots Fly Through Storms?
Pilots avoid storms, similar to how ship captains avoid icebergs. Onboard radar, communications with other planes in the area, and air traffic control all aid pilots in avoiding bad weather. Despite what people believe, aircraft are not particularly susceptible to turbulence. Turbulence is rarely a hazard for planes.
It’s still avoided for fear of being struck and for the safety and convenience of passengers. Lightning is more hazardous to planes than it is to automobiles, yet there are precautions in place to decrease the danger. Suppose an aircraft is hit by lightning without warning. In that case, it has reinforcing features designed to ensure passenger safety. Discharge wicks and a modified gasoline tank help dissipate electricity rather than kill people if an aircraft is struck by lightning.
