The Irish Potato Famine was one of the worst times to be living in Ireland. It all started in 1845 when a fungus called Phytophthora infestans, also known as “potato blight,” hit the country’s main food source, potatoes. This led to a massive crop failure, and things just went downhill from there.

It’s estimated that around 1 million people died from starvation and disease, and another 1.5 million emigrated from Ireland due to the famine. It was a tough time for sure, and one that had a lasting impact on Ireland and its people. Thankfully, many people are still about to commemorate this sad time.
