You might find yourself with an earworm you can’t get out of your head if you’ve ever heard the theme song to the beloved 1960s sitcom, Bewitched. Starring Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha, the show follows a beautiful witch who falls in love with and marries a mortal.
The sitcom’s driving conflict in each episode centers around Samantha’s use of magic and the shenanigans that ensue as she tries to hide it from the other mortals. Complete with wacky characters like Samantha’s troublesome mother, a snooping neighbor, and a slew of the funny neighborhood and mystical personalities, the show impressed each week with laughter and magic.
As the show ran from 1964-1972, the special effects may not be the most high-tech, but each episode brought the magic. Nowadays it also brings the magic of nostalgia. You may have never seen the show or grown-up loving it, but Bewitched is full of fun and interesting facts and trivia that you probably never knew.
Seeing double
If the actress playing Samantha’s cousin Serena looked remarkably like Elizabeth Montgomery, that’s because it was Elizabeth Montgomery. The lead actress of Bewitched doubled as the more rowdy and outspoken Serena. Cousin Serena first makes an appearance in season two in the episode “And then there were three.”
While the two characters obviously look and sound the same, as they are played by the same actress, their characters are quite different. While Samantha is the wholesome housewife, Serena is more self-centered and hippie in her beliefs, something that often bothers Samantha. When she played Serena, Elizabeth Montgomery was actually credited with the pseudonym Pandora Spocks.
