How to leave a tip the right way
You’ll read everywhere on the internet that tipping is a no-no in Japan. Well, this isn’t exactly true. You can tip a waiter or anyone else for a job well done but leaving money on a table or handing it directly to someone is rude. You’d think that anyone would be happy to get a few extra bucks (or yen), but it’s different in Japan.
If you want to tip, place the money in an envelope and hand it over to the employee. They might reject the offer once or twice but be persistent and they’ll eventually take it. If you leave money on the table, the waiter might chase you down the street and hand it back to you.
