You could be living the life, an independent life free from relying on others. It’s possible to live happily without having to rely on anyone else for any reason. How you might ask? Well, it’s simple really…you just have to make sure you’re prepared for anything!

I’ll show you what I mean.
Okay, imagine you’re trying to get to work and the weather is terrible so your normal route is blocked…not a problem though. You have a back up route that lets you avoid the traffic jam on your regular way in. I don’t know how it happened but not only do you arrive at work a few minutes early but you’re also a few minutes early to your morning meeting as well. Impressive indeed!
While you’re at work you realize that you forgot something for dinner so on the way home from work, before going to your evening class/workshop/practice group, you stop by the store and pick up what you need. You get home and cook yourself a nice meal then head off to whatever you had planned for the evening. What a productive day!
This all happened because you were prepared in advance. You may not have known ahead of time that your route would be blocked but you knew the city well enough to know an alternative way to work so even if it was blocked, you’d know another route you can take. You may not have known that you’d forget something for dinner but you had a list of necessities so even if you forgot, at least it wasn’t the only thing on the list…you could look for it tomorrow.

Why am I telling you all this?
Well, it’s because there are plenty of things that can go wrong in life. Sometimes the weather is so bad that your regular way to work is blocked, sometimes you forget an important item on your grocery list…one thing after another. The point is though when you’re prepared for anything it makes things easier. You don’t have to worry about what could happen next because even if it’s bad, you know that with a few extra steps and a little bit of time you can get past it.
You may be wondering how this lesson will help you become more self-sufficient … the answer is simple. By being prepared for anything ahead of time, when things do go wrong in the future you’ll be able to handle them quickly and with little fuss. Why do that now and not later, you might ask? Because if you start doing it later then by the time you’re all prepared for everything then you’ll probably be too old to enjoy using those skills because life will have caught up with you!
So now is as good a time as any to start preparing. Research what you need to be more self-sufficient, perhaps it’s a way to power your home without the electric company, a private sewer system or maybe a private dug well. There are many ways you can start being more self-sufficient without having to do those big tasks though, you could start simple with growing your own food to prepare for food shortages!
