Getting Into Costumes
When designing costumes for Vikings, costume designer Joan Bergin had her work cut out for her, attempting to achieve an authentic appearance while also making creative adjustments that would look excellent on camera. However, another aspect influenced the clothing worn by the female characters: a feeling of Viking power.
“Viking women were exceptionally powerful … they could own property and, in the end, dominate,” Bergin added. “Throughout history, all of that power has been lost by women. Women should have an equal role in every area of life with men. In Celtic countries, a woman may divorce her husband simply by walking three times around him in a circle.”
