Ivory Coast
As in other parts of the world, wedding ceremonies and customs in the Ivory Coast are becoming more and more Westernized, adopting the Western ideas for a wedding (such as a white gown for the bride). For example, the legal marriage age has been changed in 1964 for 18 for boys and 16 for girls, and polygamy was abolished.
Yet, some of the traditional customs still remain, and it’s up to the couple to decide how traditional they want their wedding ceremony to be. The traditional clothing used in weddings in the Ivory Coast is called Kente or Kita, a fabric that’s popular all around West Africa. The color and patterns changes according to what the couple wants.
