Gora Region between Kosovo and Macedonia
The Gora region sits between Kosovo, Albania and Macedonia, and if you haven’t heard of them before, it’s worth to know about the Gorani people only for their unique wedding traditions. The Gorani people are of Muslim religion and Slavic ethnicity, but their culture and traditional customs are often neither Muslim nor Slavic, but contain strong pagan elements.
In this region, they have their own cultural music, food and sports, and you probably guessed by now – their own unique wedding traditions. Weddings are a three-day event, throughout which the bride, who is adorned from head to toe, is carried on a white horse to the groom’s house, where the wedding is held. The horse, evidently, is wearing a traditional scarf and carrying a decorated umbrella.
