Traditional Wedding Dresses From Around the World

July 14, 2017 by Lisa Turner

Bride and groom in Datoga, Tanzania

Even if it doesn’t seem like it, every country in the world has its own unique culture and its society is organized according it. In Tanzania, this social organization is based on kinship and plays a central role in their everyday lives, as well as in their events, weddings included. Although the different Tanzanian tribes follow different social conventions, when it comes to weddings, they share some of the customs.

For example, in the Datoga tribe, as well as in other tribes, it is customary for the groom’s party to pick out the wedding attire, for both the groom and the bride. That’s right – the bride doesn’t get to choose her own wedding dress; for some brides, choosing the wedding gown is their favorite task, and for others it’s a burden, so perhaps it’s for the best.
