#32: Joe Gans
Gans was a pioneer of technical boxing, yet beneath the skill lay remarkable toughness. He fought through brutal conditions and unfair treatment, often giving up weight. He endured punishment calmly, relying on sheer will to prevail. Gans’ ability to outlast larger foes showed immense toughness behind his graceful technique.

In 1906, Gans fought Battling Nelson for the lightweight title in a 42-round war. He absorbed relentless punishment in the blazing sun but never quit, outlasting Nelson until Nelson was disqualified for fouling. That epic battle showcased Gans’ toughness — surviving extreme conditions and pain to remain champion.
