If you are ready to step out the door for a snowy fitness day, wonder no more! There are lots of ways to be active in the snow including snowball fights, making snowmen, and snow angels. The following list describes these activities as well as many other fun ways to enjoy the winter weather.
Snowball Fights
For snowball fights, kids can take turns making snowballs and throwing them at each other. Once the snowballs are made and all players have a pile in front of them, go ahead and start the game!
Snowmen
Building a snowman is one of the best ways to spend time outside with friends or family. The process begins by rolling three large balls of snow on the ground. Next, players can stack them one on top of each other to form a larger ball. Then, the bottom ball should be sliced in half and placed under the largest ball to create a base for your snowman. The middle-sized snowball is then placed on top of the base. Finally, a small snowball is added to the top for the head. For eyes, nose, and mouth, use small pieces of coal or rocks.
Snow Angels
To make a snow angel, simply lie down in the snow and stretch your arms and legs out wide. Then, move your body around to create a wing-like shape. Finally, hold the position for a few seconds before standing up again.
Sledding
One of the most popular activities during winter is sledding. To sled, find a hill that is not too steep and has some good snow coverage. Sit on the sled and use your feet to push off from the ground. Try to keep your body as straight as possible as you slide down the hill. In order to stop, lean into a turn and dig your heels into the snow. Sledding is a great activity for those who want to burn calories year-round.
Snowboarding
Snowboarding is a popular sport among many people around the country during the winter months. To begin snowboarding, head up a hill and position yourself properly with your feet slightly spread apart. Then, put the board on the ground and push off from it to gain speed as you head down the hill side-by-side with other snowboarders if possible. To stop, simply lean forward as you ride toward a flat surface. This will increase friction so that you can stop quickly. Snowboarding is a great way to improve your balance, coordination, and strength.
General Tips
Before heading outside for a snowy fitness day, make sure that children wear some sort of wet weather protective clothing. Also, hats should be worn to prevent heat loss through the head (which can become very dangerous in cold weather). Staying hydrated is essential during winter days as well. So, make sure to pack plenty of water and snacks.
No matter what kind of outdoor activities you choose to partake in, be sure to enjoy it! Snowy fitness days are a great way to have fun while getting exercise. So, grab some friends or family members, bundle up, and have an awesome time outdoors.
