#4: George Jefferson, All in the Family
All in the Family (1971) was built around Archie Bunker, a working-class bigot whose outdated views clashed with the changing world. Archie, played by Carroll O’Connor, was the centerpiece of Norman Lear’s social satire, sparking conversation about race, politics, and culture in America.

But it was neighbor George Jefferson, portrayed by Sherman Hemsley, who quickly became unforgettable. His swagger, sharp tongue, and constant verbal jousts with Archie electrified the show. George resonated so strongly with audiences that he spun off into The Jeffersons, one of the longest-running sitcoms of the era, easily rivaling his original lead.
