Side Characters Who Stole the Show from the Lead

Futurama (1999) followed Philip J. Fry, a delivery boy frozen for a thousand years who wakes up in the 31st century. His perspective as a bewildered everyman was designed to anchor the series’ sci-fi adventures and serve as the audience’s surrogate in a strange new world.

But Bender, the foul-mouthed robot, quickly became the true star. John DiMaggio’s character thrived on selfishness, drinking, and crime, yet remained oddly lovable. Episodes featuring his robot underworld connections, kleptomania, or failed attempts at fame consistently drew the most laughs. Bender’s chaotic energy often left Fry looking bland in comparison.
