#34: President John Quincy Adams’s Pets Alligator and Silkworms
John Quincy Adams briefly housed an alligator at the White House, gifted by the Marquis de Lafayette. Kept in a bathroom, the alligator amazed and amused guests. Adams’s family also raised silkworms, with his wife Louisa tending them and using their silk for embroidery, turning the executive mansion into a curious menagerie.

These unusual animals reflected Adams’s intellectual curiosity and openness to novelty. The alligator in particular became a legendary story, representing the eccentricity of early White House life. Meanwhile, the silkworms demonstrated Louisa’s creativity and skill. Together, they made the Adams presidency one of the most unique in pet history.
