Getting on His Right Side
You’ve probably been advised before to try to get on the teacher’s good side, but in this scenario, the students have to try to get on the teacher’s right side. Literally. The teacher was blind and deaf on the left side of his body, which ironically affected the students just as much as it affected him.
By the middle of the semester, he informed half of the class that their grades were slipping due to so many absences. These students had actually attended every single class. He just didn’t hear them say “present” during roll call unless they shouted loud enough for the class next door to be disrupted.
