Do These Japanese Customs Seem Foreign To You?

March 24, 2021 by Elizabeth Grillo

The Great Elevator Responsibility

In most places, you press the elevator buttons yourself. There are in some fancy places – elevator operators, and they take on this responsibility. In some societies, there is a designated person for that job, but without pay. How is that? Doing something for the greater good of humanity.

That’s right, in Japan – the person closest to the door operates the elevator, assisting others by pressing the floor/button they need. This especially holds if that person is behind someone. There is, however, one downside – this person is often the last to get out. Talk about a lack of on-the-job perks.
