No More Handshakes, A Simple Bow Will Do

In many Western countries, handshaking is regarded as the most respectful way to greet new and old friends. In some instances, a hug is warranted. Across many Asian countries, including Japan, shaking hands is not the primary way of greeting someone, though. 

Even in the workplace, foreigners might be shocked to learn that bowing is widely regarded as the most common greeting, not a handshake. To avoid any confusion, you should practice a few times before making the trek. If you reach in for a handshake, you could not only cause some confusion, but you could show a lack of respect, so when in Rome, bow.
