Conformity is key
When polled, a huge group of school children said that their greatest fear about living in a foreign land is individualism. It’s not that Japanese people don’t want to express their individuality, but they’re raised on the principle that conformity, at least in terms of appearance, is the key to a better country.
You can see clear signs of this by looking at how school children dress, how office workers dress, and the colors of the surrounding buildings. However, as a collective, they can be judgmental towards the most basic “unique” things travelers do. So, if you ever head on over to Japan (we highly recommend it), just get ready to be ogled at.
