50 Rules in Japan that Foreigners Have Trouble Understanding

December 27, 2015 by Veronica Phillips

Respect the business card

As you might imagine, people take business very seriously in Japan. You won’t find pool tables or other awesome amenities in the workplace. And when someone hands you a business card, you better treat it with the utmost respect. That’s just how people do business in Japan.

The business card, known as meishi in Japanese, represents one’s place of work. When they hand it over, they use both hands while bowing slightly. You should do the same when receiving the meishi. Also, put it away in one of your pockets and don’t cram it into your wallet. Don’t worry about losing it, people lose them all the time.
