50 Rules in Japan that Foreigners Have Trouble Understanding

December 27, 2015 by Veronica Phillips

Sluuuuuuurrrrrpp your soup

When dining outside, you’re most likely going to receive soup as a side dish. You might even receive one at the end of a meal. For most of us, we’d usually go at it with a spoon and crackers, but in Japan, you won’t receive any of those things.

The right way to drink (eat?) your soup is by lifting the bowl with both hands to your mouth and drinking it like you would a glass of water. Oh, and don’t forget to a slurp a little bit as you do so. When foods with broth in them, slurping is considered not only polite but also as a way to show that you like the food served to you.
