Guess That Means They Can’t Smell Themselves
The fact that rats can’t vomit isn’t as mind-blowing as it is odd. Apparently, rats can neither barf nor burp, nor can they experience the burning sensation of acid indigestion. After researchers cracked open a rat carcass (for scientific purposes), they discovered a powerful lining between the esophagus and stomach.
The esophageal muscles aren’t powerful enough to reposition the barrier lining, which is essential for releasing vomit. So, how do they purge their systems of toxins if they can’t hurl chunks? First, they avoid toxins altogether, and second, they dilute any toxins they accidentally consume by eating dirt and clay.
