Larry the Immortal Lobster
But the immortal jellyfish isn’t the only immortal animal under the sea. Regular lobsters, the ones we eat on occasion, are biologically immortal. For most animals, our DNA will continue to create new cells only for a limited time until our DNA strands split at the “tips.” After that, any new cells create unwanted mutations.
As for a lobster’s DNA, they don’t degrade in the same way. This basically means their DNA can supply an infinite number of healthy cells throughout its lifetime, which is infinite if it doesn’t get attacked or caught in a lobster trap. So, if you purchase a lobster now, raise it as a pet, your great-great-great-great-great grandchildren can enjoy a hearty lobster roll.
