Bewitched was dreamed up and created by Sol Saks, but the idea didn’t just appear in his sleep or from a lightbulb above his head. Saks has said that there were two films that inspired Bewitched. I Married a Witch, a film that sounds pretty self-explanatory, (and a lot like the plot of Bewitched) and Bell, Book, and Candle were the inspirations for his TV show.
While the pilot and plot might have been based on these movies, further episodes steered away from the movies. Additionally, copyright infringement and litigation weren’t an issue, as both movies were owned by Columbia Pictures, the film industry that also owned the production company that produced Bewitched.
