#7: Lou Henry Hoover, Wife of President Herbert Hoover
Lou Henry Hoover studied geology at Stanford, becoming the first First Lady with a science degree. She spoke several languages, co-translated a major Latin mining text with her husband, and engaged in worldwide humanitarian work. Her education and curiosity made her one of the most intellectually accomplished First Ladies.

She brought a scientific and international outlook to the role, unusual for her time. Passionate about women’s education, she also promoted outdoor exploration and civic service. By pairing intellect with action, she offered Americans—especially women—a glimpse of a more modern, forward-looking way to live and contribute.
