#22: Lucy Webb Hayes, Wife of President Rutherford B. Hayes
Lucy Hayes was the first First Lady to hold a college degree, graduating from Wesleyan Female College in 1850. Intelligent, lively, and principled, she promoted education, temperance, and social causes. Nicknamed “Lemonade Lucy” for banning alcohol at White House events, she still hosted with warmth and a genuine sense of duty.

Her education and ideals shaped a White House that reflected values of reform and morality. At a time when women had limited voices in politics, she showed how scholarship and personal conviction could guide the nation’s social standards. Her influence helped elevate expectations of women in public life.
