If It’s Pink – I Want It
Aah, the pink lawn flamingo – the eternal icon of American suburban Kitsch! This fun and tacky lawn ornament (and I’m using tacky in the most positive way here) is probably the most iconic of American pop culture design. American artist Donald Featherstone invented it in 1957 and they say he kept exactly 57 plastic flamingos on his own back lawn in Massachusetts.
Ever since the 50s, the pink flamingo has been the go-to for American kitsch esthetic and retro style. It has made quite a few comebacks in fashion and design since then, and it also lent its name to John Waters’ legendary underground classic cult film from the 70s, the outrageous “Pink Flamingos.”
