Don’t Be a Stranger
Americans are much more outgoing and chattier than Europeans. Many of us actually have a habit of talking to strangers or just smiling at strangers. In other words, we Americans are nice and friendly. America has a history of rejecting nobility in favor of equality, which might be a reason for that.
I had a friend, originally from Belgium, who moved with her family to Atlanta, Georgia, when she was in high school. I remember she found it a bit creepy that every time she accidentally made eye contact with a kid in the class, they smiled at her. Other kids also said “hi” to her in the hallway even though she didn’t know them. If you’re not used to this, it takes a while to get used to – but even reserved and shy Europeans have to admit that this is really nice and welcoming.
