50 Questions Non-Americans Asked Americans with Surprising Answers

December 18, 2015 by Veronica Phillips

It’s peanut butter jelly time!

An inside joke… now that’s a joke! PB&J is a classic American delicacy. Our finest school chefs have been preparing this dish for centuries. Moms around the country have been making them for lunch. Folks who don’t have it in them to make a full meal will whip out the white bread and jars of spread.

But now that I think of it, mixing two completely different spreads together does sound a bit odd. We wouldn’t do this with Nutella or marmalade, so why jelly? Well, the recipe has been around since the early 1900s, and WW2 soldiers had them in their ration packs. If you haven’t tried a PB&J sandwich, make one. Right now.
