Eye doctor
Let’s get one thing straight. Yes, we Americans call opticians “eye doctors.” Yes, it sounds ridiculous, since we’d never call a dentist a “tooth doctor” or a dermatologist a “real doctor” (just kidding, dermatologists). But I’d also like to point out the confusion about a few key points.
We have opticians who help you find glasses and contact lenses. Then we have optometrists who diagnose and treat eyes. Finally, there are ophthalmologists who perform surgery on the eyeball. To avoid all of this unnecessary confusion, we group them all as eye doctors. However, it certainly does the trick, and others will know what kind of eye doctor we’re talking about without having to mention their specialty.
