#39: Fake Military Checkpoints Are Used To Kidnap Travelers
Cartels in Mexico have staged fake military or police checkpoints on highways to abduct entire busloads of travelers. Armed men wearing stolen uniforms stop vehicles, check IDs, and then disappear with passengers who are often never seen again. These ambushes leave behind only abandoned buses and terrified witnesses.

Victims are usually taken for ransom, forced labor, or recruitment into cartel ranks. The fake checkpoints are so convincing that even locals sometimes can’t tell they’re impostors until it’s too late. This tactic shows the boldness of organized crime and the danger of traveling in certain regions.
