A Look at the Dark and Mysterious Side of Mexico

In some rural Indigenous communities in Mexico, girls as young as 12 are still forced into arranged marriages. Families sometimes see daughters as economic assets and marry them off for dowries or to settle debts. These child marriages often trap girls in cycles of poverty, abuse, and lost opportunities.

Although child marriage is illegal, enforcement can be weak in remote areas. Many girls are pulled out of school and expected to become wives and mothers while still children themselves. Activists are working to end the practice, but progress is slow in places where tradition outweighs the law.
