#22: Mexico City Has Catacombs Filled With Human Bones
Beneath Mexico City lie forgotten catacombs containing the bones of thousands of people who died during colonial-era plagues and executions. These underground chambers were used when cemeteries overflowed, and they remain packed wall to wall with skulls and skeletons, forming an eerie and hidden layer beneath the bustling capital.

Many of the bones date back hundreds of years and are remarkably well preserved. Access is restricted to protect them, but historians say they hold vital clues about life and death in colonial Mexico. Their existence adds a dark, secret dimension to one of the world’s largest cities.
