#14: Sinkholes Can Swallow Entire Buildings In The Yucatán
The Yucatán Peninsula is full of cenotes—natural sinkholes created by collapsed limestone bedrock. While many are beautiful swimming spots, others have appeared suddenly under homes, roads, and farmland, swallowing structures whole. Their sudden formation can destroy property in seconds and leave behind gaping holes dozens of feet deep.

These sinkholes are linked to an enormous underground river system that winds beneath the peninsula. Heavy rains or seismic activity can trigger collapses without warning. Locals live with the constant knowledge that the ground beneath them could vanish, revealing the hidden watery world just below their feet.
