[nextpage title=”Next”]Members of the British monarchy are supposed to be the most elegant, buttoned-up people in history. As the tradition states that a King or Queen is annointed by God himself, you’d expect them to behave accordingly…
However, in these 15 cases, that couldn’t be any less true. I guess royalty are people too, it’s just that everytime they cross the line, it’s world news. It was hard to pick the top, but here are the best unforgettable royal scandals!
15. Prince Harry goes Nazi
Just two weeks before the international Holocaust Memorial Day, Prince Harry decided it was a good idea to turn up at a ‘colonials and natives’-themed costume party dressed as a Nazi.
He was photographed wearing a swastika armband and a uniform similar to those worn by the desert German Afrika Korps.
The Prince himself reacted by saying “it was a poor choice of costume, and I apologize.”
Maybe he should have taken advice from his brother: Prince William wore a homemade outfit representing leopards and lions.

14. Charles and those four words
Though this isn’t as much as a scandal, but more like a tragic representation of their relationship, it couldn’t be excluded from this list.
While royal weddings are often associated with notions of fairy tales and everlasting love, marrying Lady Diana Spencer involved less romance and more cringe-level fake laughs for Prince Charles.
In an engagement interview in 1981, it became clear just how bad he was at concealing his unease with the situation.
When asked if they were in love, Diana (just 20) responded with: “Of course!”. However, Charles’ (32) follow-up suggested otherwise: “Whatever ‘in love’ means..”

13. Kate Middleton’s Topless Photos
As Kate Middleton is one of the most beautiful members the royal family has ever seen, it’s not that surprising that she likes to put her body on display from time to time.
However, for the British royals, not wearing a pantyhose under a dress or wearing a skirt that hits the knee is already revealing. So when French magazine ‘Closer’ published topless photos of Kate sunbathing, it must have been quite a shock for the Queen.
To be fair, Kate was staying with Prince Wiliam, her husband, at a French chateau, and just seem to have forgotten to mind the super-zoom lenses of paparazzi.
The magazine also featured photos of William applying sunscreen to Kate’s bottom.
Kate has had her fair share of Marily Monroe-moments, when the wind made her skirt fly up, so Buckingham Palace reportedly hired a female wardrober to prevent further accidents.

12. Princess Margaret: a bank heist and compromising photographs
It is a well-known fact that Queen Elizabeth’s sister Margaret was the best-looking member of the royal family, and she had a lifestyle to go along with it.
While she was married to photographer Armstrong-Jones, she had several affairs with a number of men, some even quite famous like Mick Jagger.
Reportedly, when robbers broke into Lloyds Bank and stole nearly 5 million pounds worth of funds, they found some pretty risque photos of a naked Princess Margaret partying on an island with her famous friends.
This is never officially confirmed, but reporters were forced by government officials to dropping the bank heist story.

11. What happens in Vegas…
The young Prince Harry has seen his fair share of scandals and mischief, as already seen previously.
One of the most shocking stories of the past years was when Harry ventured to Las Vegas in 2012 and engaged in some pretty wild partying. He then started encouraging everyone to get naked, and of course he shortly followed.
He was then photographed with his hands strategically covering ‘the royal bits’ and with a naked girl appearing behind him. After a naked butt photo made the press as well, party attendees (including a girl who said to have made out with the Prince) said he was just looking or a good time.

10. Prince Philip offends Australia’s Aborigines
It’s a well-known fact that Prince Philip isn’t the most diplomatic man to ever exist. This revealed especially during a visit to the Aboriginal Cultural Park in Queensland in 2002.
As a part of the Aboriginal rights movement, the Aborigines seek freedom from oppression and poverty and hope to forever cast off the stereotype that they’re warring tribesman and savage natives. Philip didn’t get the memo..
He asked successful Aboriginal businessman William Brin, “Do you still throw spears at each other?”
Once again, Buckingham Palace was left to clean up the mess, saying they were ‘lighthearted comments’ and that there was no offense intended.

9. Princess Anne makes fan cry
On Christmas Day 2000, 75-year old pensioner Mary Halfpenny spent three hours making a flower display for Queen Elizabeth and waited several hours outside one of the royal family’s country homes, hoping to present it to her.
While Queen Elizabeth never got to see the flowers, Princess Anne grabbed the bouquet and snorted, “What a ridiculous thing to do!”
Naturally, Halfpenny emotionally proclaimed “it was a really hurtful thing to say.” She also stated: “I’ve made baskets of flowers for the Queen, and she has always said how nice they are.”
Princess Anne’s attitude continued when she told her nieces to ‘get a move on’ and discouraged them from accepting any flowers from well-wishing spectators.

8. Prince Charles and Camilla
When Charles married the youthful and vibrant Diana, it turned out he could never really get over his former flame Camilla Parker Bowles.
Charles and Camilla were close friends and his admiration for her grew, until Camilla married a cavalry officer who she fell in love with.
However, Charles supposedly spent the night with Camilla the night before his marriage with Diana in 1981. When his marriage to Diana wasn’t working, he resumed his relationship with Camilla.
To make matters even worse, Charles once told Camilla in a recorded telephone conversation that he wanted to be reincarnated as her tampon… Yuck.
We guesss that beautiful piece of figurative speech worked, as they were wed in 2005.

7. Queen Victoria’s racy behaviour
One of the most famous Queens of the royal family, Victoria, reigned from 1837 to 1876, and during her rule, she was quite the rascal.
For example, she had a painting made of herself for her husband’s eyes only. The picture features the queen wearing an off-the-shoulder gown with her hair loose across her left shoulder.
It wouldn’t even be special now, but at that time, that much bare skin was considered so racy that Albert hung it in his private room so no one could see it.
Besides that, she was secretly married to her servant after her husband died.
To spice things up even further: Victoria wrote erotic passages about the servant in her diaries. They were so ‘hot’, Victoria’s daughter burned all of the pages..

6. Philip offending Scotland
When in 1988 the Pan Am Flight 103 was bombed, it killed 259 passengers and crew members. Even more: large sections of the plane crashed into homes in Scotland, killing 11 unknowing residents.
In 1993, when Prince Philip was visiting the streets where the victims had died on the ground, he shocked locals by comparing their tragedy to some drainage problems at their royal estate.
“People usually say that after a fire, it is water damage that is the worst,” he continued, “we are still trying to dry out Windsor Castle.”

5. Sarah Ferguson and the ‘Fake Sheik’
Nicknamed ‘the Duchess of Pork’, as a references to her ever fluctuating weight and engagement in Weight Watchers programs, Sarah Ferguson managed to gather a lot of attention since her marrying and subsequently divorcing Prince Andrew in 1986.
First, she had several affairs which led to her divorce and was photographed topless with a millionaire sucking on her toes, but that’s not the end of it.
Fergie rocked the headlines when she offered a businessman access to her ex-husband Prince Andrew and the royal family in exchange for £500.000 (roughly $820.000).
She accepted the offer, but the wealthy Arab businessman she stroke the deal with turned out to be an undercover reporter, who documented everything.
You can find the full footage of the scandal here.

4. Prince Charles hates the press
In 2005, journalists gathered to make a photo marking Charles’ imminent wedding to Camilla.
During the shoot however, Charles couldn’t hold back his contempt any longer and muttered to his sons: “I hate doing this… I hate these people”.
He was at that time, totally unaware that his microphone was still on, and everything was recorded by the BBC.
When the BBC’s royal correspondent asked about the upcoming wedding, Charles responded with: “I’m very glad you’ve heard of it, anyway”.
After that, he turned to his sons again and whispered “Bloody people. I can’t bear that man. He’s so awful, he really is.”

3. Andrew and the WikiLeaks
Prince Andrew has proved he is perfectly capable of sullying his reputation without any help from his ex-wife Fergie. In 2010, WikiLeaks published reports that describe how Andrew spoke “cockily” at a lunch in Bishkek.
He proclaimed that Americans “know nothing about geography”, dismissed the “idiocy” of Britain’s anticorruption officials and scolded “those journalists who poke their noses everywhere” in regards to bribery investigations.
When one businessman suggested that only those who were willing to participate in corruption could make money, the prince apparently responded with: “All of this sounds exactly like France.”

2. Henry VIII’s wives
This is undoubtedly the most well-known royal, since it gave rise to a whole new Church and is actually taught in standard European history courses.
You may remember Henry VIII because of the fact that he was somewhat of a playboy with a short temper, as he had not one, not two, but six wives, and had two of them executed…
Known as a king who killed everyone who didn’t agree with him, he reigned from 1509 to 1547. He had his second wife charged with treason and incest, and punished to death for it..
Two wives later, he found out his current wife had several affairs, which earned her a beheading.

1. The abdication of King Edward
While the idea of giving up being the King of England for the love of a woman seems like a fairy tale story, it is the most horrible scandal to the royal family.
In 1936, King Edward stepped down from the throne to marry the woman he loved, who was American and (even worse) twice divorced.
This caused so much uproar and stir that he was basically banished by his own family, who thought him to be the biggest traitor possible, a villain even.
Edward didn’t enjoy being King too much anyway, but the amount of hate he received was enormous. Thanks to him, his stuttering brother Albert had to be crowned, after the Prime Minister threatened to abdicate as a protest.
He married the woman he loved though, and they went on to be one of the era’s most stylish couples ever. It was also said he was one of the few royals who actually had a happy marriage after all..
